Review of Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics
Written by Toniann
This is really CJ's episode, but what I like the most about it is that this was brewing for
awhile. The situation with Mandy's memo, the business with India/Pakistan. Subtle
shadings in the way Sam and Leo, especially, deal with her. I like that this self-doubt of
hers didn't come out of left field. And I liked that she got to show them all in the end.
You go, CJ.
I liked the tension in the polling room, mostly coming from Mandy, but geesh, she
didn't even ask if anyone was chewing gum.
Accusing Josh of distracting the female callers is just a compliment, CJ; don't get the
boy all puffed up.
You know, how do they get all those aerial shots of the White House? I mean, I know,
with a helicopter, or something, obviously. It just strikes me that they never seem to be
the same camera shots, used over and over, they each seem different. Lots of footage, I
guess.
Sam and Laurie: I'm sorry, I can't get on board with Sam on this issue. During his
entire conversation with Toby I could see him bridling, insisting that she be called by
name, later making comments about how she put herself through law school. Well, call
me cold and unfeeling, but that gets my goat. She put herself through law school by being
a hooker, therefore we should all be impressed? Excuse me? Amazingly, I know lots of
people that put themselves through law school without resorting to prostitution, and I'm a
heck of a lot more impressed by them. Go sell this brand of liberal idealism elsewhere.
The "hooker with a heart of gold" persona is never going to work for me.
Speaking of people with no sympathy for hookers, though, wow, Laurie's waitress
friend was awfully chummy for someone who'd actually just sold her down the river.
I hate to pick on poor Barry Haskell, but man, get a backbone, guy. I just couldn't help
but snicker every time he talked about what his wife and her friends had told him. I get
the feeling Mrs. Haskell wears the pants.
There's just something appealing about the Island of Yap, you know? I mean, I didn't
know it existed before, but even though the U.S. embassy isn't there, I'm just dying to
see it.
Margaret: "one egg is un oeuf". That's just terrible. I mean, really.
You know, what is a "full lid", anyhow? When CJ says the "lid is on"? I get the gist, the
general mise en scene, as she once said, but seriously, exactly what is she saying?
Lastly, I have to say, that when Josh said Joey told him CJ was worried there were only
so many more times she could "sing a song", that made sense to me. Seriously, I thought
she was making a comment about her "Jackal" performance, and how everyone likes her
and thinks she's a blast to have around, but that that's not enough to keep her job. So
actually, the fact that she really said "say you're wrong" was slightly less interesting. :)
